Snail the Wah
SNAIL THE WAH - RELEASED NOV. 2005

Unwired album cover

Snail the Wah was recorded in a little farm house in Ancaster over 5 days in the summer of 2005. Locked away from the rest of the world, EM set up, and hit record to capture the most raw Magma recorded to date. With a double album concept, with Disc 1 being all studio work, and Disc 2 being all unrehearsed jams (which Magma LOVE doing), the album eventually got squeezed onto one disc, which ultimately clocks in at over 70 minutes! While the concept is still there, the cost of releasing two albums was just too much for Electric Magma at the time.

Tryg and Tim consumed a two of beer for every day (yep, thats 48) that we recorded. Too bad it was LUCKY LAGER, and tasted like garbage.

COMMENTS:

TOM: I remember how fucking hot it was!! I usually sweat when I play, but this was ridiculous! The vibe of the studio was very cool though. It was an old farmhouse; the bottom floor was the studio and upstairs was the soundboard and mixing area. By then, we were drinking Lucky Beer (not sure if we were that lucky though), the cheap shit was all the rage, and it was easier on our wallets. I remember wondering how many beers Tim and Tryg drank, there were cases, I’m talking cases, of empties, and I don’t think I ever saw them without a beer in their hands! fsBut it was super hot and humid and I think we just sweated all the beer out because none of us even had a buzz.

TRYG:I remember how hot it was out when we were recording this album. It was the middle of the summer and we were in this century old stone farm house in the country.... you couldn't ask for a better recording environment.  We basically rented the studio out for a week and just had free reign to go nuts.

Tim and I went through at least two cases of beer a day while recording this album.  some people call us a stoner rock band.... hmmm i think it would be more apporpriate to call us a beer rock band.   I remember Tom saying he thought Tim and I were insane, he couldn't believe the beer consumption between the two of us HAHAHAHA.  funny thing was we weren't drunk the whole week, I dont know if it was the heat, or just how immersed we were in the recording and tracking process... but no matter how much beer we drank, we just didn't really feel the effects.

I also remember a strict diet of back bacon and cheddar cheese BBQ'd sandwiches.  Tim brought his keg-o-cue and we basically BBQ'd every night.

At the end of each day of recording we would retreat upstairs to the
console room... which had a great vibe!  thats where the air
conditioning and cable TV  was and thats where we bunked out at night.  So basically Tim and I would get everything cued up, sit back and go over the days recordings and fish out the best jams for the CD.

TIM: Fucking insane week. Thats what i remember. I was working nights the odd night too, so there were all nighters (annd day'ers) for me. Also, There was a MASSIVE heat wave on the week that we recorded. Tryg forgot to mention that this little farm house didn't have air conditioning. It had one little unit on the upper floor, but had to turn it off when recording. The place was very tiny, and held in heat like the the inside of an oven. We sweat our BAGS off, but it was cool, we had a bal! (excuse the pun)

It was funny about the beer. We started the first day buying a 24 each. We figured that would last us a couple days at LEAST. The next day, back to the beer store.... 2 more cases. Then that night we ran out, and had to go to the strip joint to get more beer. Then the next day we went back to the beer store, and the same guy looked at us as if to tell us we had a problem.

Good times

TRYG:  I remember Tim dubbed this album "Snail the Disaster" at one point because technically.... this CD was a freakin NIGHTMARE... it seemed everything that could go wrong DID go wrong.  In the end though everything came together just fine (like it always does)... but this CD put up a huge fight every single step of the way... it would have defeated lesser men hahaha.

TOM: Oddly enough, I don’t remember much else about the recording... I had to work during the week, so I was only there during the weekend. Oh yeah, we recorded a whole side live off the floor. Now that was fun! We basically just jammed the three of us in the same room, no pressure, no click, I loved it, and a lot of cool stuff came out from that session. I think we should revisit some of those jams and play them live. What do you guys think?
